Occupational Therapy Service

What are Occupational Therapists?

Occupational Therapists evaluate a child or young person’s abilities in playing, learning, school performance and daily activities. Support is based on an understanding of the child/young person’s behaviours and performance, the occupations in which he or she engages, and the context for those occupations. When evaluating a child/young person’s performance, the Occupational Therapist determines how performance is influenced by individual needs and how the environment supports or constrains performance.

The Occupational Therapist also identifies discrepancies between the child/young person’s performance and activity demands and interprets the meaning and importance of these discrepancies.  Analysis of the interrelationships among environments, occupations and children/young people is the basis for evidence-based decisions.  

At the same time that Occupational Therapists systematically analyse the child/young person’s occupational performance and social participation, they acknowledge that the spirit of the child/young person also determines who he or she is and will become. The Occupational Therapist always views the child/young person as an individual first.

About our Occupational Therapy Service

Our Occupational Therapy Service provides comprehensive assessments to identify strengths and needs of students in the areas of fine and gross motor, sensory processing, cognitive and social skills. The outcome of assessment and consultation is used to offer advice regarding classroom based intervention, individual or group therapy. Professional training is also available through the service.

Care Flow Pathway

The Occupational Therapy Care Flow Pathway describes the process of Occupational Therapy in ESF in how and where referrals are received:

1. Once the child is accepted, the therapist will start data collection through consultation with parents, teachers and review of previous reports.
2. The therapist may also contact other agencies who has and/or will work with the child to generate a unique profile.
3. The therapist will then conduct formal assessments to verify data collected to analyse behaviours and guide intervention.
4. The pathway also describes a variety of Occupational Therapist interventions and reviews.

Programme and charges

The following represents a series of guide prices for Occupational Therapy assessment and programmes. Actual price will be based on consultation between therapist and parents and based on specific services requested.

Screening and Consultation

HK$1,500

This is recommended for children resuming therapy. This will include review of reports, consultation with teachers and parents regarding their areas of concern and data collection and screening for the child. The therapist will work with parents and teachers to facilitate goal setting. The therapist will inform parents if further assessment is required.

Comprehensive Occupational Therapy Assessment

HK$3,750

This is recommended for new service consumers. This includes initial interview, consultation with parents and teachers, objective standardised assessments and a written report. The therapist will work with parents and teachers to facilitate goal setting and each party's role working towards the objectives. Assessments conducted will be pending on the child's need.

A ten-session cycle of 1:1 Specialist Intervention Package

HK$7,500

As a result of assessment, the Occupational Therapist may recommend either 1:1 or group training depending on performance level and area of needs of the individual child. The 1:1 specialist intervention provides ten training sessions to improve fine motor/gross motor skills, visual perceptual function and, enhance sensory processing of individuals in school. Home programs will be offered if necessary.  A review will be conducted after the intervention cycle.

A ten-session cycle of Group Package

HK$4,000

This programme is conducted by the Occupational Therapist. Three group packages are available: Motor coordination, balance, fine motor skills, social thinking and visual skills.
Motor coordination group involves training for posture, running, jumping in a controlled manner, hand-eye and gross motor coordination training with use of games and activities.
Fine motor skills group to develop mature hand grasp patterns, pencil grasp and control, handwriting, cutting, colouring, and typing/computer use.
Visual skills training is for oculomotor control for following lines of print, copy, and left-right directionality, as well as visual perceptual training for spatial awareness and understanding of math concepts. These are the foundation to improve reading, copying and mathematics performance.

Occupational Therapy Training Packages

HK$1,500

The Occupational Therapist offers regular training to educational assistant and teachers. Trainings may include understanding of children with additional educational support, tips and strategies that can be applied in the classroom to modify behaviour and assist in reading and writing.  Specific training is available on request.

On-Demand Parent Consultation

HK$750/hour

This is recommended for parents who require a consultation service only. The therapist will provide consultation and professional advice with issues raised in discussion such as behaviour management at home and school; difficulties with academic performance, self-care training and sensory processing issues.
Additional charges may apply if meetings take place in locations other than the ESF Therapy Centre.
