Welcome the Year of the Snake With Our ESF Lunar New Year Card
A graceful snake, glowing lanterns, and delicate red blossoms take centre stage in this year’s ESF Lunar New Year card, a magnificent creation by eight-year-old Sarah Wang from ESF Bradbury School.
Her thoughtful design beautifully captures the culture and traditions of the festive season, while marking the arrival of the Year of the Snake.
“Having my art chosen to be on the ESF Lunar New Year card feels very exciting,” says Sarah. “I am very happy about it. I feel proud of myself.”
Our amazing primary student told us that she brought her design to life using a traditional art technique. “I used a special calligraphy brush called ‘mao bi’ in Chinese, along with ink to create my image. This style of Chinese painting is called Shui Mo,” she explained.
ESF Chief Executive Officer Belinda Greer selected Sarah’s artwork as part of the annual ESF Lunar New Year art competition, which attracted hundreds of impressive entries from across our schools.
Students of all ages, from kindergarten to secondary, submitted paintings, drawings, collages, and digital illustrations, showcasing the incredible talent within our wonderful ESF community.
“Sarah’s creativity and talent shine through in every detail, making her outstanding design a perfect celebration of this special time of year,” says Belinda.
“Her confident use of the traditional Shui Mo painting style and her skill with a calligraphy brush are truly impressive, reflecting Sarah’s passion for art and her commitment to perfecting every detail.
Congratulations to Sarah and to all our students who submitted such imaginative and joyful creations in this year’s art challenge.”
Speaking with Belinda about her love of art, Sarah said, “I like that I get to experiment with different styles and techniques. I also like using my imagination and being creative.”
ESF Bradbury School Principal Kate Gower expressed great pride in Sarah’s achievement, saying: “Sarah’s painting beautifully captures the snake’s characteristics of wisdom, intelligence, and determination. These qualities reflect our core values of inspiring creativity and celebrating diversity within our school community. We are truly proud of Sarah’s remarkable accomplishment.”
Bradbury School’s Head of Chinese Tracy Au Yeung added:
“The Chinese Zodiac is a treasure of traditional culture, carrying the wisdom of our ancestors and has been passed down for thousands of years. This card embodies Sarah’s understanding of traditional culture, allowing the ancient wisdom to shine with new brilliance in her hands.”
Sarah’s class teacher, Katie Doherty, was equally thrilled about her student’s achievement. She said: “This not only showcases Sarah’s creativity and talent but also her hard work and dedication. May this success inspire Sarah and her peers to continue exploring their artistic passions.”
We hope you enjoy sharing this beautiful card with your community as we welcome the Year of the Snake together.
